The European Super Cup began in 1971, however the first Super Cup officially recognized and supported by UEFA was a couple years later, which was played between Ajax and Milan, in which Ajax won 6-1 on aggregate (it was in 1997 that the last two-legged format was played). Since then it has been a one match winner takes all.
It wasn't until the 2009–10 season, the UEFA Cup was renamed the UEFA Europa League. But essentially no change, the winner of the UEFA Champions League plays the winner of the UEFA Europa League winner. There have been 24 different clubs to have lifted the UEFA Super Cup trophy, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Milan leading the list with five titles. Real Madrid with the 2022 encounter against Frankfurt have successfully tied for first place. In terms of the most successful nations for the UEFA Super Cup, that title is held by Spain with 16 titles (14 runner ups), held by five different teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, and Sevilla). England is the second most successful club with 9 titles, who just is ahead of Italy who also have 9 titles, but with the runner up advantage (England's ten runners ups to Italy's four).
