Elche CF, known as Franjiverdes for the "Green Stripe" that is sported (some say it was inspired by palm groves that grew and formed a green strip between all vegetation), has been around since 1923. Elche experienced La Liga relevance early in the 60s and 70s, where they participated in 17 of 19 La Liga campaigns, having twelve consecutive La Liga campaigns from 1959-1960 to 1970-1971. There best La Liga finish happened during this period (they finished 5th in 1963-1964) and are a one time Finalist for La Copa del Rey in 1969.

In the 80s and 90s, the club after falling from the top flight, began having financial problems. And the more they failed to be promoted, the more the problems continued, that they went on full on crisis mode. From 1978 to 1990, of the thirteen seasons that passed by, eleven of them were in La Segunda. And from 1991 to 1999, they experienced third tier football seven of the eight seasons.

Top flight football was continuing to be elusive as from 1999-2000 to 2012-2013 they continued to be in La Segunda, until they returned to the top flight briefly for two consecutive seasons (from 2013-2015) to later fall back to the third tier of Spanish Football only three years later. In matter of fact,
in 2014-2015 Elche weren't relegated by position of the table as they finished 13th, but rather they became the first team ever in La Liga to be relegated to La Segunda following recently passed regulations by the league offices limiting excess debt and economic mismanagement.

But they returned to top flight football in La Liga for the 2020-2021 campaign, in which they survived by the slightest of margins (finished 17th in the table) and consequently, they were able to create momentum in the following campaign, where in the turn of this recent decade (the 2020s), they have participated in three consecutive La Liga campaigns.
